Kitchen Renovation FAQ
The total cost of a kitchen renovation is variable because there are so many different ways to remodel a kitchen. From a simple DIY kitchen renovation with a budget flatpack in a small apartment kitchen, to a custom-made kitchen installation with high-end appliances in a large family home.
At Granite Transformations we pride ourselves on offering affordable kitchen renovation solutions to our customers throughout metropolitan Sydney. Although you can create a new look kitchen on any budget, we suggest the following average kitchen costs:
- Budget Kitchen – the cost of a small kitchen renovation on a tight budget can easily be achieved for under $10,000 where you retain the existing layout and use cost saving measures such as painting kitchen cabinets and doors and using laminate benchtops. However, the average small kitchen renovation is closer to $10,000+ if you want a professional kitchen finish.
- Mid-Range – the average cost of a mid-range kitchen renovation is from $15,000 to $25,000. This allows for some adaptation of the floor plan, such as adding a kitchen island, repositioning plumbing and wiring, replacing cabinetry and/or cupboard doors, resurfacing benchtops with stone or marble surfaces.
- High-End – the average cost of a bespoke custom designed kitchen is $30,000+ and is likely to include the cost of demolition of part of your existing kitchen, luxury marble or stone benchtops and splashbacks, high-end European appliances and custom designed butler’s pantry. The sky is the limit!
The cost of the kitchen makeover will depend on the quality of materials used and the amount of remedial work required.
Our expert kitchen design team and qualified installers can work with you every step of the way to create a kitchen within your budget that also matches your style and lifestyle. With over 25 years’ experience, we keep the cost of a kitchen renovation affordable without compromising on quality.

The cheapest way to get a new kitchen is to simply replace the benchtops or countertops. Many people prefer to DIY most of the kitchen renovation themselves to keep the cost down, however they choose to invest in a new stone benchtop for a fresh and modern look. So what does it cost to replace benchtops?
A brand new traditional stone benchtop will cost upto $2000 per metre and marble benchtop costs even more. An affordable alternative is to update a kitchen with benchtop resurfacing. Not only is this cost effective, your benchtop can be installed in as little as a day with minimal disruption.
The cost of granite stone benchtop resurfacing is $950 per metre.
The cost of marble benchtop resurfacing is $1050 per metre.
Granite Transformations specialise in benchtop resurfacing, being the original kitchen resurfacing company in Australia. These versatile surfaces can also be used on kitchen splashbacks, bathroom vanities, laundry countertops, floors, walls and even furniture.
We can also provide other benchtop surfaces, such as laminate, timber or whole stone. Contact us if you would like to discuss other benchtop options to match your style and budget.
At Granite Transformations we can help you create your dream kitchen with a fully customised new kitchen design. The cost of a new kitchen will largely depend on the size of the kitchen and the cost of the materials and appliances used. The average cost of a total new kitchen remodel is $35,000 upwards, the sky is the limit! However a kitchen makeover can cost half as much and look just as good as a new installation.
One way to save money on new kitchen installations is to use our popular benchtop resurfacing product in marble or stone. These surfaces are equal in look and durability of a full stone or marble benchtop but cost a fraction of the price.
When setting a budget for your kitchen makeover it is important that you consider all the kitchen costs. Our convenient cost calculator breaks down most of these costs for you, but you should keep in mind the following:
- Benchtops
- Splashbacks
- Cabinets, doors and panels
- Oven, stovetop, exhaust fan and microwave
- Dishwasher, fridge and coffee machine
- Sink and tapware
- Flooring
- Cornices and skirting
- Lighting
- Demolition
- Rubbish Removal
- Kitchen Installation
- Plumbing
- Electrical
Beware that most kitchen companies do not include the cost of all of the above when providing a kitchen cost estimate. In particular appliances and flooring cost will vary depending on the quality and brand chosen. When getting quotes for your kitchen renovation make sure you ask what is and isn’t included from this list.
When considering the cost of a kitchen you may also want to take into account ways to make your kitchen more environmentally friendly. There are several things to consider, including:
- Choose benchtop resurfacing for sustainable and eco-friendly kitchen renovation. Less mess and less waste taken to landfill.
- Choose energy and water efficient appliances from brands that are designed to last.
- Ensure your bins make recycling easy.
- Invest in induction cooktop if you can, they are more energy efficient and cook faster than other options.
- Consider certified sustainable bamboo flooring.
- Installing LED lighting.
- Offsetting the household’s carbon emissions by switching to an accredited GreenPower supplier and rethinking.
We always tell our clients to consider the amount of time it will take them to DIY paint kitchen doors and panels when considering the cost of painting kitchen cupboard doors. Although the paint cost will work out significantly cheaper than kitchen door replacements, your time is valuable and the quality of the work may not reflect the look you want for your kitchen.
Unfortunately, we have seen many poorly painted kitchen cupboard doors which the owners ultimately decide to replace not long after the paint dries. Paint can peel and scratch easily, whereas modern kitchen doors are designed to withstand bumps and knocks. This is especially true of our polyurethane doors, which are long lasting and can also be painted in any colour you choose.
Granite Transformations offer 4 door types including melamine, ultra glaze acrylic and polyurethane. Use our cost calculator to work out the cost of your cupboard door replacement.
If you do decide to paint your doors we suggest using a spray gun with high quality paints that are specifically designed to respray kitchen doors. If you are planning to sell your home and want the kitchen to increase the value of your home we strongly suggest investing your money in a professionally renovated kitchen.
There are a number of things to consider when deciding whether or not to replace kitchen cupboard doors. It is better for the environment to reuse kitchen cabinetry and some clients choose to sand, paint and veneer existing cupboards. However your kitchen cupboards need to match the quality and functionality of your new kitchen. Things to consider when deciding if it is worth the cost of new kitchen cabinets include:
- Some old kitchen cupboards are poorly designed, so check that they are deep enough or low enough for your appliances and cookware.
- It might better to replace cupboards with pull-out drawers or rotating shelves for a more user friendly kitchen layout.
- What is the quality of existing kitchen cabinets? It is no surprise that cupboards installed prior to the 1980’s are often very good quality timber. If the original kitchen cupboards are not of good quality it make sense to replace them.
- Check your kitchen cupboards for any excessive wear and tear or water damage, particularly around pipes.
Our Sydney kitchen cupboards are priced according to size. Use our convenient online kitchen cost calculator to estimate the cost to replace kitchen cabinets in your home.
Every household is different and the kitchen design that works best will depend on the layout of your home and the size and lifestyle of your family. Some people love to entertain and want an integrated outdoor entertaining area, while others live in an apartment and prefer a small functional kitchen.
One key feature of a successful kitchen layout is the work triangle. This is the main area of the kitchen that links the fridge, sink and stove and is where food is stored, prepared and cooked. If the work triangle is the right size then everything you need will be within easy reach, while ensuring you have the right amount of space to work in, even when other people are in the kitchen. Be sure to discuss this with your kitchen designer who will help you to optimise your space.
The kitchen layout will be determined by the space available, whether it’s an L-shape, U-shaped, G-shaped or galley, one kitchen feature everyone wants is a sitting area, such as an island or extended benchtop, where the family can interact while someone is working in the kitchen.
Don’t forget to make sure you have enough power points in the correct position for all your appliance needs.
It’s generally best to install flooring after your cabinets and appliances are in place to minimise the risk of damage. If this is not possible our installers will ensure the floors are properly protected throughout the installation of your kitchen.
Most kitchen companies manage cabinetry and benchtop installation only. Owners are generally required to organise their own plumbers, electricians and gasfitters as well as purchase appliances and arrange installation of flooring.
At Granite Transformations we have relationships with local tradespeople and offer a range of high-quality European appliances so we can confidently manage the whole kitchen installation process from start to finish, saving you time and worry.
Council approval is not usually necessary for a kitchen renovation unless major building work or demolition is required. We recommend checking with your local council if you are unsure.
