KITCHEN RENOVATION FAQ

  • How much is the average kitchen renovation cost in Australia in 2021?

The 2019 Houzz and Home Renovation Trend Guide estimated the average cost of a kitchen renovation is $20,000.

However, the total cost of a kitchen renovation is variable because there are so many different ways to remodel a kitchen. From a simple DIY kitchen renovation with a budget flatpack in a small apartment kitchen, to a custom-made kitchen installation with high-end appliances in a large family home.

At Granite Transformations we pride ourselves on offering affordable kitchen renovation solutions to our customers throughout metropolitan Sydney. Although you can create a new look kitchen on any budget, we suggest the following average kitchen costs:

    • Budget Kitchen – the cost of a small kitchen renovation on a tight budget can easily be achieved for under $10,000 where you retain the existing layout and use cost saving measures such as painting kitchen cabinets and doors and using laminate benchtops. However, the average small kitchen renovation is closer to $10,000 if you want a professional kitchen finish.
    • Mid-Range – the average cost of a mid-range kitchen renovation is from $15,000 to $25,000. This allows for some adaptation of the floor plan, such as adding a kitchen island, repositioning plumbing and wiring, replacing cabinetry and/or cupboard doors, resurfacing benchtops with engineered stone or marble surfaces.
    • High-End – the average cost of a bespoke custom designed kitchen is $30,000+ and is likely to include the cost of demolition of part of your existing kitchen, luxury marble or stone benchtops and splashbacks, high-end European appliances and custom designed butler’s pantry. The sky is the limit!

The cost of the kitchen makeover will depend on the quality of materials used and the amount of remedial work required.

Our expert kitchen design team and qualified installers can work with you every step of the way to create a kitchen within your budget that also matches your style and lifestyle. With over 25 years’ experience, we keep the cost of a kitchen renovation affordable without compromising on quality.

Use our convenient kitchen cost calculator to estimate the cost of your kitchen renovation. If you have any questions our friendly staff are available to help.

If you prefer to speak to a designer you can schedule a no-obligation free quote in your home. We service the Sutherland Shire and most Sydney suburbs south of the bridge, including the Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, St George and Liverpool areas.

  • What is the cost of benchtop resurfacing in Sydney?

The cheapest way to get a new kitchen is to simply replace the benchtops or countertops. Many people prefer to DIY most of the kitchen renovation themselves to keep the cost down, however they choose to invest in a new stone benchtop for a fresh and modern look. So what does it cost to replace benchtops?

A brand new stone benchtop will cost upto $2000 per metre and marble benchtop costs even more. An affordable alternative is to update a kitchen with benchtop resurfacing. Not only is this cost effective, your benchtop can be installed in as little as a day with minimal disruption.

The cost of granite stone benchtop resurfacing is $625 per metre.

The cost of marble benchtop resurfacing is $810 per metre.

Granite Transformations specialise in benchtop resurfacing, being the original and best kitchen resurfacing company in Australia. We have over 25 year’s experience and our benchtop surfaces are sustainable and ethically sourced, giving you peace of mind that you are getting a quality product that is better for the environment and your health. These versatile surfaces can also be used on kitchen splashbacks, bathroom surfaces, laundry countertops, floors, walls and even furniture.

We can also provide other benchtop surfaces, such as laminate, timber or whole stone. Contact us if you would like to discuss other benchtop options to match your style and budget.

  • How long will a kitchen renovation take to complete?

The beauty of a Granite Transformations kitchen makeover is that we try to retain existing cabinets and surfaces to minimise the cost and the time taken to complete the renovation.  Our stone benchtop surfaces can be installed in as little as 1-2 days, which makes them a popular choice for busy families wanting to avoid the mess and disruption of a full renovation.

The average kitchen renovation requires approximately 4 weeks from the date of measurement to the completion of installation. The work of customising cabinets and cutting benchtops is done offsite by our local manufacturing team and takes on average 3 weeks.  Our accredited installers aim to be in and out of your home as quickly as possible, with the actual installation time averaging less than a week for a kitchen makeover.

  • What is the kitchen work triangle?

The work triangle is a concept that was created in the 1920’s to measure efficiency in a residential kitchen. The triangle creates a clear path between food preparation area (stovetop), the cleaning area (sink) and the food storage area (fridge). You can see the work triangle in the image above.

The key principles of the work triangle include:

    • There should no appliances or cupboards intersecting the triangle.
    • There should be no major traffic through the triangle.
    • The length of each arm of the triangle is between 1.2m and 2.7m.

  • What is a kitchen renovation cost breakdown?

When setting a budget for your kitchen makeover it is important that you consider all the kitchen costs. Our convenient cost calculator breaks down most of these costs for you, but you should keep in mind the following:

    • Benchtops
    • Splashbacks
    • Cabinets, doors and panels
    • Oven, stovetop, exhaust fan and microwave
    • Dishwasher, fridge and coffee machine
    • Sink and tapware
    • Flooring
    • Cornices and skirting
    • Lighting
    • Demolition
    • Rubbish Removal
    • Kitchen Installation
    • Plumbing
    • Electrical

Beware that most kitchen companies do not include the cost of all of the above when providing a kitchen cost estimate. In particular appliances and flooring cost will vary depending on the quality and brand chosen.   When getting quotes for your kitchen renovation make sure you ask what is and isn’t included from this list.

  • How can I make my kitchen more sustainable?

When considering the cost of a kitchen you may also want to take into account ways to make your kitchen more environmentally friendly. There are several things to consider, including:

    • Choose benchtop resurfacing for sustainable and eco-friendly kitchen renovation. Less mess and less waste taken to landfill.
    • Choose energy and water efficient appliances from brands that are designed to last.
    • Ensure your bins make recycling easy.
    • Invest in induction cooktop if you can, they are more energy efficient and cook faster than other options.
    • Consider certified sustainable bamboo flooring.
    • Installing LED lighting.
    • Offsetting the household’s carbon emissions by switching to an accredited GreenPower supplier and rethinking.

  • What is the cost of kitchen cupboard doors - should I paint my existing kitchen cupboard doors or replace them with new doors?

We always tell our clients to consider the amount of time it will take them to DIY paint kitchen doors and panels when considering the cost of painting kitchen cupboard doors. Although the paint cost will work out significantly cheaper than kitchen door replacements, your time is valuable and the quality of the work may not reflect the look you want for your kitchen.

Unfortunately, we have seen many poorly painted kitchen cupboard doors which the owners ultimately decide to replace not long after the paint dries. Paint can peel and scratch easily, whereas modern kitchen doors are designed to withstand bumps and knocks. This is especially true of our polyurethane doors, which are long lasting and can also be painted in any colour you choose.

Granite Transformations offer 4 door types including melamine, ultra glaze acrylic and polyurethane. The cost of our kitchen cupboard doors range from:  (LINK)

    • Base door – $185 for a standard melamine door to $259 for a polyurethane shaker door.
    • Tall door – $390 for a standard melamine door to $546 for a polyurethane shaker door.
    • Drawer face – $115 for a standard melamine drawer to $161 for a polyurethane shaker door.

Use our cost calculator to work out the cost of your cupboard door replacement.

If you do decide to paint your doors we suggest using a spray gun with high quality paints that are specifically designed to respray kitchen doors. If you are planning to sell your home and want the kitchen to increase the value of your home we strongly suggest investing your money in a professionally renovated kitchen.

  • What is the cost of kitchen cabinets – should I keep my existing kitchen cabinets or buy new kitchen cabinetry?

There are a number of things to consider when deciding whether or not to replace kitchen cupboard doors. It is better for the environment to reuse kitchen cabinetry and some clients choose to sand, paint and veneer existing cupboards. However your kitchen cupboards need to match the quality and functionality of your new kitchen. Things to consider when deciding if it is worth the cost of new kitchen cabinets include:

    • Some old kitchen cupboards are poorly designed, so check that they are deep enough or low enough for your appliances and cookware.
    • It might better to replace cupboards with pull-out drawers or rotating shelves for a more user friendly kitchen layout.
    • What is the quality of existing kitchen cabinets? It is no surprise that cupboards installed prior to the 1980’s are often very good quality timber. If the original kitchen cupboards are not of good quality it make sense to replace them.
    • Check your kitchen cupboards for any excessive wear and tear or water damage, particularly around pipes.

Our Sydney kitchen cupboards are priced according to size and range from. .   Use our convenient online kitchen cost calculator to estimate the cost to replace kitchen cabinets in your home.

  • What is the best kitchen layout?

Every household is different and the kitchen design that works best will depend on the layout of your home and the size and lifestyle of your family. Some people love to entertain and want an integrated outdoor entertaining area, while others live in an apartment and prefer a small functional kitchen.

One key feature of a successful kitchen layout is the work triangle. This is the main area of the kitchen that links the fridge, sink and stove and is where food is stored, prepared and cooked. If the work triangle is the right size then everything you need will be within easy reach, while ensuring you have the right amount of space to work in, even when other people are in the kitchen. Be sure to discuss this with your kitchen designer who will help you to optimise your space.

The kitchen layout will be determined by the space available, whether it’s an L-shape, U-shaped, G-shaped or galley, one kitchen feature everyone wants is a sitting area, such as an island or extended benchtop, where the family can interact while someone is working in the kitchen.

Don’t forget to make sure you have enough power points in the correct position for all your appliance needs.

  • Should kitchen flooring go down before or after kitchen cabinets?

It’s generally best to install flooring after your cabinets and appliances are in place to minimise the risk of damage. If this is not possible our installers will ensure the floors are properly protected throughout the installation of your kitchen.

We recommend speaking to the team at Mint Flooring for their expert advice on the best floor surface for your kitchen.

  • Do I need to organise tradies when I renovate my kitchen?

Most kitchen companies manage cabinetry and benchtop installation only. Owners are generally required to organise their own plumbers, electricians and gasfitters as well as purchase appliances and arrange installation of flooring.

At Granite Transformations we have relationships with local tradespeople and offer a range of high-quality European appliances so we can confidently manage the whole kitchen installation process from start to finish, saving you time and worry.

  • Do I need Council approval for a new kitchen or kitchen renovation?

Council approval is not usually necessary for a kitchen renovation unless major building work or demolition is required. We recommend checking with your local council if you are unsure.

  • How can I make my kitchen more functional?

Storage, storage storage!!  More kitchen storage is what most people are looking for to make their kitchen more functional and to ensure the space remains uncluttered and tidy. There are some easy ways to do this, which include deeper cabinets, cabinets with appropriate shelving, cabinets that reach the ceiling and efficient use of corner spaces.

Be aware of the kitchen triangle in your kitchen design and make sure you have as much bench space as possible. Older style kitchens didn’t offer a lot of bench space, so it is a good idea to plan your layout to optimise your work area.

  • Should I do some DIY in my kitchen renovation?

We understand that doing some of the work yourself is appealing for the sake of your budget, but we strongly advice you to think carefully before picking up the paintbrush and tools. We have seen too many DIY disasters that end up costing more to fix than they would have cost if the kitchen had been left to the professionals in the outset.

Some people like to take on the role of project management, but there are many trades that need to come in and multiple issues that need to be coordinated. A kitchen makeover with Granite Transformations means you have access to a team of experienced professionals who can take the headache and stress out of coordinating the tasks associated with your Sydney kitchen renovation.

If you are handy on the tools you could order one of our custom made kitchen flatpacks for self-installation. You could remove the old kitchen yourself and, if it is still in working order, and sell it on Gumtree to someone looking for a cheap kitchen for their investment property.

Painted kitchen cupboards and benchtops will not stand the test of time, but can be a good temporary option if you can’t yet afford a professional kitchen makeover on a small budget.

  • How can I make my kitchen more environmentally friendly?

When considering the cost of a kitchen you may also want to take into account ways to make your kitchen more sustainable. There are several things to consider, including:

    • Choose benchtop resurfacing for sustainable and eco-friendly kitchen renovation. There will be less mess and less waste taken to landfill by retaining existing surface and frames.
    • Choose energy and water efficient appliances from brands that are designed to last.
    • Ensure your bins make recycling easy.

    • Consider certified sustainable bamboo flooring.
    • Installing LED lighting.

  • What are your top tips for a renovation on a budget in Sydney?

Most people want to renovate more than just the kitchen as part of their Sydney home renovation, so sticking to a budget is important. Some of our kitchen designer tips for the best value kitchens include:

    • Keep your existing kitchen layout to avoid demolition costs.
    • Only replace the kitchen cupboard doors and keep existing cabinets where possible. New doors, drawer fronts and end panels may be enough to give your kitchen a much needed facelift if the original cabinets are still in good condition.
    • Resurface benchtops and splashbacks – don’t replace it, just reface it!  This can save you thousands of dollars on your renovation. Our Trend kitchen surfaces can be used on walls, floors and more and are available in over 30 on-trend colours. Choose from a classic white stone benchtop, grey and black granite or our traditional marble benchtop range. Our marble range has been very popular this year and is very reasonably priced. Sign up to our newsletter to be the first to hear about one of our sales.
    • Change kitchen door handles and knobs. This can be one of the easiest and cheapest ways to update a kitchen on a budget. Make sure the handles are the same size so they fit the existing hole spaces.
    • Add kitchen pendant lighting above the benchtop for a modern look in your kitchen. They can make a big impact on the overall look and there are many affordable options available.

  • Can I change my kitchen layout?

How efficient is your current kitchen layout? Do you have an efficient work triangle? Your existing layout may feel comfortable because that is what you are used to. We have some of the best kitchen designers in Sydney who might have ideas for a completely different layout that improves the overall look and feel of your home. The most common kitchen layouts are:

    • The Single Wall Kitchen – a simple layout popular in small kitchen renovations.
    • The Galley Kitchen – two rows of kitchen cabinets facing each other to create an inner passage, or galley. This is an uncomplicated design and can be a cost effective option if you are renovating on a budget.
    • The L-Shaped Kitchen – with cabinets along two perpendicular walls to create an L- shape is a practical layout for open plan kitchens. Clever cabinetry or a walk in pantry in the corner will improve the functionality of this layout.
    • The U-Shaped Kitchen – Great for larger kitchens, this style of kitchen allows for an uninterrupted work triangle.
    • The Kitchen Island – A favourite for open plan homes, the island bench is perfect for extra storage and a large work surface that can be utilised from within the kitchen for food preparation and from outside the kitchen for kids to do homework or eat snacks. Modern pendant lighting above the kitchen island can really add to the style and look of your kitchen.
    • The Peninsula Kitchen – Similar to the island kitchen, the peninsula is a good compromise when there is not enough space for a freestanding island. A peninsula is attached to one of the walls of the kitchen enables interaction during meal preparation.

  • What is the best pantry size?

The size of the pantry may not be as important as the pantry design. A poorly designed pantry may take up a lot of empty space that could be more cleverly utilised with modern features, such as door shelving, pull out drawers and storage racks. We can recommend pantry inserts that will maximise the space you have available in your kitchen.

  • I'm going over my kitchen renovation budget! How can I reduce the cost of my kitchen?

It’s easy to go over your kitchen budget, especially if you choose high-end materials and appliances. At Granite Transformations we specialise in getting value for money and will always recommend a less expensive material option if it is available. Our designer will work with you to ensure you get the optimum result for your budget. Speak to our kitchen experts.  We can offer a range of budget options that look good and don’t cost the earth!

  • Is there anything I can do about my corner cabinets?

The dreaded corner cabinet has traditionally been a deep open space that is impractical to access and the doors often hang loose due to broken hinges. Fortunately, kitchen designs have evolved to provide a wonderful range of kitchen corner solutions. A popular new concept is the corner drawer unit. A lazy susan or swing pullout cupboard are also smart alternatives. Our kitchen designer can discuss your options and help choose what will work best in your kitchen.
