Space Invaders
Hamptons Kitchen Makeover

Space Invaders Season 3
Season 3 Begins

Did you catch the first episode of Space Invader’s, Season 3 this year? Granite Transformations helped with an impressive Hamptons style kitchen makeover and homeowners Bec & Julian were thrilled.

‘Australia’s Renovation Queen’, Cherie Barber was excited to have us on board last season as our stone benchtops help add style and value with minimal fuss to her kitchen renovations.

It was an obvious choice to have us contribute again this season and we were happy to showcase ‘Misterio’, one of our new additions to the marble benchtop collection, for the very first episode! Read on for all the details of this charming Heritage Hamptons kitchen makeover.

Sydney Coastal Apartment

Episode 1

Cherie Barber brought this 3-bedroom oceanside apartment to life with a Heritage Hamptons style renovation. The apartment was built in the 1930’s so adding a heritage element  made perfect sense. The main aim for Cherie was to include lots of blues & whites with a beachy touch of class. Being a ground floor apartment, the interior also needed to be bright to accentuate the limited natural light.

The Hamptons Kitchen Transformation

Homeowner Julian was using the kitchen as his home office, which meant the area was cluttered and essentially unusable for its intended purpose. Luckily there was enough space in the apartment to convert the spare bedroom into a new home office so the family could finally get their kitchen back.

The existing kitchen had good bones. It was a double galley style with two parrallel benchtops and kitchen cabinets on opposing walls. It therefore provided great storage with plenty of overhead cupboards that went all the way up to the high ceiling on both sides of the room.

MARBLE benchtop resurfacING

Being in good condition, Cherie opted for a kitchen facelift rather than a complete rip out and rebuild. She didn’t want to remove the benchtops, as this could have damaged the adjoining structures that needed to stay. She decided to resurface the outdated yellow laminate benchtops with our new ‘Misterio’ stone from the marble range.

Marble Benchtops

We simply placed the thin 7mm layer of real granite, straight over the old benchtops. This stone added the touch of class Cherie was after, with its soft lines drifting across light, white marble. The pattern is subtle, elegant and refined yet detailed enough to create a stunning feature. Being stain, scratch, impact and citric acid resistant, it’s a much more durable option for the kitchen than the previous laminate benchtops. This marble look is a popular choice for the timeless in a Hampton style kitchen.

Other Kitchen Features

Cherie also removed the 90’s mirrored splashbacks and added a subway pale blue tile for that beachy Hamptons feel.

The kitchen doors were thoroughly cleaned to reveal their original whiteness, and the timber frames were painted white to match. The new paint on the walls and ceiling really brightened up the room too.

The existing oversized wall mirror remained. It provided a heritage feel but also reflected the light from the opposite window and created the illusion of more space.

Cherie chose a Southampton Pendant from Beacon Lighting which gave off more light than the old fitting and added to the heritage charm.

Bec & Julian’s dining chairs no longer worked with the new colour scheme, so they were replaced with 4 x Hamptons style chairs. New co-host, Angie Kent also got involved by upcycling the existing dining table with fresh paint and applied self-adhesive 3D tiles to the table top.

The damaged timber floorboards couldn’t stay so Cherie chose the Majorca Palm Springs tiles in Blue Matt. The pattern and colour reflect a Heritage Hampton’s interior and helped to elevate the entire apartment.

The Big Reveal!

When it came time for Bec and Julian to see their new kitchen, they were absolutely thrilled.

Property Valuation

The total cost of this home renovation which involved the kitchen, dining, three bedrooms including a home office and hallway was $50,802.51.  After the renovation, the property was valued at $150,000 more which resulted in a net profit of $99,197.49.

Bec & Julian are not planning to sell any time soon, but they now have a beautiful home which acknowledges the history of the building and suits their needs.

In case you missed the show, you can stream it on 9now. Be sure to catch us on upcoming Space Invaders episodes which airs Saturday nights at 7:30pm on Channel 9.
